“We are grateful to those in this session who shared their own experience of being in wars and fleeing their homelands.”

Laura Timms

Training lead, Children and War UK

In April 2024 we ran two days of training for the Bedford Early Support Team, who help children and families coming to the UK from Ukraine, Syria, Afghanistan and other war-torn countries.

The course was attended online and included family support workers, teachers and an infant mental health lead. It was delivered by our trainers Laura Timms and  Ukrainian-born Dennis Ougrin, Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Global Mental Health at Queen Mary University of London and visiting professor at Kings College London, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

Professor Ougrin leads a programme of information exchange between the UK and Ukraine and has been at the forefront of developing support for children caught up in the war.

What we do makes a difference

Now more than ever, children need help to cope with the trauma they're experiencing.

Children and War UK is working to give them essential tools to reduce the long-term effects of traumatic stress.

Thank you.
