“By taking a sponsored walk of any length, the schoolchildren taking part will be making a positive contribution to the mental health of children suffering from traumatic events, as well as learning more for themselves about mental health issues. If any other schools want to take part, please get in touch.”

Children from three Dorset schools are making a special walk – William’s Walk – to honour our co-founder, child psychologist William Yule (main picture), and to raise funds for our child-centred work.

Starting on UNICEF World Children’s Day, 20 November, pupils of all ages at Shaftesbury School, Sherborne Primary and St Andrew’s Primary, Yetminster, are walking to raise funds to help support children enduring unimaginably traumatic events in the UK and across the world, including in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Our co-founder, Professor William Yule, was a pioneer in understanding and mitigating the effects of trauma on children. In 1993 UNICEF invited William to advise on setting up community-based psychological programmes for children affected by the conflict in Bosnia. Bill’s mentoring and training of clinical psychologists to carry out the work made ground-breaking strides in this field and is the basis for our work today.

Sadly William passed away in November 2023. In honour of his memory, we are inviting schools to organise a William’s Walk, which can raise funds to help traumatised children and also raise awareness of mental health issues among children.

We are grateful to all those who will be taking part, and welcome enquiries from any other schools that would like to be involved.
