Trauma recovery manuals
Our training is based on a series of manuals that can be used in your own practice, to help children at risk of long-term trauma. After attending a training session, you can use the manuals to cascade TRT within your organisation and elsewhere. They can be downloaded using the links below.
The TRT manuals have been developed over three decades of frontline experience in post-emergency situations around the world. Together they make up our programme of Teaching Recovery Techniques (TRT), which has been recognised by international bodies as evidence-based and effective.
An online training session in how to use the TRT manuals.
Recommended use of the manuals
The manuals are evidence-based, scalable psychological interventions, designed to help children in resource-poor settings following conflict and emergencies.
We do not recommend that these are used as stand-alone interventions, but that they are integrated into a co-ordinated response.
We recommend that the manuals are used in accordance with core principles of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) in emergencies: Human rights and equity, participation, do no harm and building on available resources.
We strongly recommend that TRT is used according to the Inter Agency Standing Committee (IASC) guidelines on MHPSS in Emergency Settings and the MHPSS Minimum Service Package, so that TRT is used in the context of a multi-sectoral response. Even in an emergency setting, humanitarian actors and communities should plan, establish and co-ordinate a set of minimum responses to protect and improve people’s rights and health.
We strongly recommend that other tools are also used (see interagency guidelines and tools for strengthening mental health and psychosocial support).
