Meet the trainers
Our training is carried out by highly qualified personnel with experience in the frontline of children’s services and humanitarian situations around the world. We gather them in our Trainers’ Forum, whose members are listed below.

Dr. Jai Shree Adhyaru
Training co-ordinator
Dr. Jai Shree Adhyaru is a consultant psychologist dedicated to supporting children affected by conflict and crisis. Her work focuses on trauma, resilience and culturally responsive mental health care. At Children and War UK, Jai contributes to the development, research, training and dissemination of evidence-based interventions that help children recover from traumatic experiences and rebuild emotional wellbeing within families, schools and communities in a global context.

Helen Christie
Helen Christie is a clinical psychologist specialising in child and family therapy. Before retiring she was the director of a regional centre for child and adolescent psychiatry, research and postgraduate education. Over the past 40 years, Helen has worked with traumatised adults and children affected by war in Gaza, Bosnia, Kurdistan and elsewhere. She has also contributed to building competence among helpers. She has developed three manuals for women, men and children exposed to sexual violence in conflict areas, for the organisation Mental Health and Human Rights Info.

Dr Aala El-Khani
Dr Aala El-Khani is a humanitarian psychologist and specialist in Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS). She has authored numerous MHPSS, trauma recovery, family skills and parenting interventions and resources for the United Nations and other international organisations. Aala is highly experienced in developing, adapting, training, and implementing these interventions in war and displacement contexts. She co-authored the TRT Plus Parenting manual. She has led training in over 40 countries, including Afghanistan, China, Iraq, Uzbekistan and Palestine.

Sara Marques
Sara Marques is a clinical psychologist at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, working within National and Specialist Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. She has experience of supporting children and young people affected by trauma across NHS and charitable settings. Her work is grounded in evidence-based, trauma-informed approaches, with interests in teaching, research and international work supporting children and communities across diverse cultural contexts.

Professor Dennis Ougrin
Dennis Ougrin is Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Global Mental Health at Queen Mary University of London. He is a visiting professor at King’s College London and an honorary consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist at the Enhanced Treatment Service at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. Trained in Ukraine and Britain, Dennis leads a programme of information exchange between the two countries. His main professional interests include prevention of Borderline Personality Disorder and effective interventions for self-harm in young people.

Nataliia Pashko
Nataliia Pashko is a psychotherapist trained in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. She facilitates support groups for children and parents within the TRT programme. Nataliia has more than 15 years of experience working with children and adults affected by war-related trauma, violence and loss. She is also an expert and developer of training programmes focused on the protection of children’s rights and the promotion of child wellbeing.

Dr Victoria Russ
Dr Victoria Russ is a senior clinical psychologist working primarily within NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in the UK. She previously worked within a military mental health service. She specialises in trauma recovery and is an accredited CBT practitioner, with additional training in EMDR. She has completed further university training in the supervision of therapists and psychologists and has published peer-reviewed research on complicated grief.

David Trickey
David Trickey is a consultant clinical psychologist working with traumatised children, young people and families since 2000. He is Co-Director of the UK Trauma Council and works part-time at Cambridge University Hospitals supporting those affected by medical trauma. His work has spanned specialist NHS services, charities, training and supervision internationally, with a focus on research-informed practice. He also contributed to UK national PTSD guideline revisions.

Kateryna Yavna
Kateryna Yavna is a psychologist and accredited cognitive behavioural therapist with the European Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Therapies (EABCT), working with children, adolescents and adults. She is a supervisor and lecturer at the Ukrainian Institute of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Kateryna currently lives in London and originally come from Lviv in Ukraine.
