Relationship with CAW Foundation

Children and War Foundation (based in Norway) and the charity Children and War UK are two  organisations with a common origin, dedicated to providing psychological help for children affected by wars, natural disasters and other catastrophic events.

The two sister organisations develop and promote evidence-based psychological interventions, in particular the manual Teaching Recovery Techniques.  This offers a structured, evidence-based programme (TRT) grounded in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) that helps reduce post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and strengthen coping.

TRT was first developed in the 1990s by a group of British and Norwegian child psychologists working in humanitarian situations. Since then it has been subject to use and research in a variety of humanitarian contexts and crisis-affected communities worldwide.

In 2000 this group set up the Children and War Foundation in Bergen, Norway. In 2021, the British supporters’ group set up Children and War UK as a registered charity in the UK, based in London.

The two organisations are separate legal entities and independent in all respects, including finance and governance. But we share the same objectives and offer the same specialised services worldwide, so we work together in many ways. We collaborate as appropriate on researching and developing TRT and other interventions, as well as on training professionals and others in how to use TRT with children.

If you are interested in becoming involved with TRT – as a trainee, a researcher or an organisation – you can contact either charity and we will ensure you speak to the right person.
