“I consider this project important because it helps and gives hope. Hope for all of us, Because without hope, it’s very hard to live.”
This inspiring film shows the heartache and recovery of Ukrainian families arriving in the UK and adjusting to their traumatic experiences with help from the Teaching Recovery Techniques (TRT) programme.
Made by St Mary’s Ukrainian School in London, the film explains how TRT works and includes interviews with mothers and TRT specialists, including our Ukrainian training lead, Kateryna Yavna (pictured below).
Kateryna said: “This TRT programme consists of two meetings with the parents and five meetings with the children. During these sessions, children learn to cope with negative memoeires, nightmares and anxious thoughts. They also learn to face their fears. We also teach children how to nurture hope, and dream of a happy life.
“These skills help prevent the development of PTSD in the future. The longer a child remains alone with their fears, memories that suddenly return to their life, and anxiety, the greater the risk of developing PTSD in the future.”
The TRT programme at St Mary’s School was set up in 2022 and in the two years since then it has screened 500 children and held 22 group sessions with war-affected children. They have also held 129 individual sessions with children with special needs.
